All Eyes On: Lawal Mayowa

About

My name is Lawal Mayowa, Aged 20 years, born on the 2nd of August and based Lagos, Nigeria. Really that’s by the books, we all on the quest to realizing what or who we are.  I’m an artist birthing on the romantic between art, style and color.  Portraying the art of cultures and beliefs through uniquely and traditionally patterned fabrics, colors and vibrance by revisiting the concept (abstract idea) of African native fashion (Ankara) I don’t just photograph or capture what I see, I only capture what I feel when I see it.

Statement

Leveraging my background as a muse which constantly influences my body being utilized as a tool for me to weave or wrap alternate visions of myself or visions idealized in my conscious and subconscious. I explore multiple forms and approaches in creating art or expressing concepts in my art pieces to suit my mind aesthetics.  My artistic practice explores the landscape of the African native print or Dutch wax print also known as ANKARA. Birthing the romance between art, style and color. The pain of inability to express verbally is a constant motivation to keep doing so through visual arts and writings. I hope the nature of my artistic practice act as an entry point into my life and also to individuals who resonate with my arts.
