Rising Star: Shannon Rae

About me

I am Shannon Rae, I was born in 1993 and I am a self taught artist. For as long as I can remember I’ve had two passions in life, art and animals. I was either found playing with or painting all my favorite creatures as a child. I ended up putting a pause on painting for a few years, in that time worked in vet clinics getting my fill of animals. The pull of the paintbrush however was too strong and in 2021 with the support of my husband and family decided to give full time art a go.

Statement

I start each piece of artwork with a paint brush, a tube of acrylic paint, and an emotion I can’t shake. I find the beginning of a painting is a mostly intuitive process pulling from a fascination with color, nature, and some sort of structure. Once an idea is formed then the mess making begins. As I move through a painting I decide the colors to use and how detailed a piece needs to be based on what feels right. Each piece is a unique journey through my mental health, a way for me to deal with existence.
