Rising Stars: Marta Urosa

Me & my work

Since the beginning of my art practice, I took a keen interest in the art works made by self-taught artists whom have developed a career out of the mainstream. For instance, Bill Traylor, James Castle, Minnie Evans, Howard Finster, or Sister Gertrude Morgan. From a general point of view, I try to create my own language in the most honest manner. Related with the formal aspect, my paintings are made with small objects from my everyday experience, which makes the result really close to the “Assemblage”. They show a high symbolic content as a manner to transcend or represent reality.  Regarding the size, I currently work using small formats to express a feeling or sense of intimacy. For this reason I call them “Paintings for a little room”. I was born in Madrid in 1971 and completed the Studies of Fine Arts at the University Complutense (Madrid, 1998). I lived in Barcelona and London, where I spent five years in contact with other visual artists. Currently I live and work in Madrid.
