Biography

Andrea Mindell Cohen is a Canadian-Spanish visual artist based in Barcelona. She worked in the fashion industry for many years as a fashion and textile designer in Los Angeles and Barcelona. Presently a multidisciplinary artist works combining various types of printmaking, photography, drawing, painting and textiles to create immersive installations. She has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Tel Aviv, Berlin, Mallorca and Barcelona.

Cohen received her BFA from Otis/Parsons College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, Ca. and a degree in fashion-textile design from the International Academy of Design and Technology in Toronto, Canada, along with her studies abroad in art history and photography at Lorenzo de Medici School in Florence, Italy. She continued her art practice at the Zaritsky Artists House of Printmaking and Surface Design, in Tel Aviv and later a residency in lithography and printmaking at Quadrat 9 in Barcelona.

Statement

Andrea Mindell Cohen works across disciplines combining printmaking, drawing, collage, painting, and textiles to create immersive installations. Through her work, she seeks to challenge the traditional identities and gender roles ingrained in the Sephardic (Spanish/Jewish) culture, and pursues to construct new meaning in the images she creates. Her artwork is deeply inspired by stories of women, combined with traditional and contemporary cultural influences from her Spanish/Moroccan ancestry.

Cohen is interested in the connection between cultural heritage and personal identity her work draws from nuanced, gender, family and religion. Her explorations involve collecting imagery as an integral part of her process; Using alternative forms of printmaking through pigment transfers, lithography, mixed medium collages on a variety of fabric and paper. She frequently integrates her own photography documenting people along with old family photos and found images as part of her cultural memory.
