Oscillation by Vidushi Gupta

In her project “Oscillation”, Indian documentary photographer Vidushi Gupta (*1996) addresses the stigmatization of people with mental illnesses and their struggle of having impaired abilities. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018 and the introspection that followed the diagnosis, Vidushi was inspired to take a new visual approach towards the topic through conceptualized images.

About Me

I, Vidushi Gupta (b. 1996), am a documentary photographer based out of Delhi, India. I received formal education in art and photography and started working on the first project in year 2018. It was research led still documentary project about the origin, traditional practices and contemporary existence of indigenous tribe living in Western Ghats of India. After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the same year I introspected for a long time and started feeling more connected and disconnected from reality. This inspired my new visual approach of conceptualized images that metaphorically describe mental illnesses and struggles associated with them.

Oscillation is a concept-based photography project. It addresses the stigmatization of people with mental illnesses as well as their struggle of having impaired abilities. By creating a safe space to initiate a dialogue, the project aims to incentivize awareness. The gradual shift in the perception or de-stigmatization will result in social inclusion, improved access to medical care, a more empathetic environment.
