Rising Stars: Ioana Tocoaie

Ioana Tocoaie (b.1998) from Sibiu Romania, studied in Sibiu at the Art School of art, later going to Cluj-Napoca where she completed her bachelor’s and master’s studies at the University of Art and Design. The leap in his artistic activity started in high school, obtaining 1st place at the Fine Arts Olympiad, painting section, two years in a row. A series of exhibitions, competitions and performance scholarships followed. Among which we mention the scholarships obtained from the Svasta Foundation, the Foundation of the Royal House Margareta of Romania or from the University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca.
During the years of the faculty, she exhibited with groups of artists at events such as Diploma, Vizualia, within the Cluj-Napoca Museum or events organized by the University and the ”Center of interest”. She obtained the title of “Magna cum laude” in 2021 and 3rd place at the “Young artist in contemporary creation” event.

Ioana Tocoaie’s ( b.1998, Sibiu, Romania), artistic practice centers around the fantastic, superimposing recognizable elements from a feminist area with metamorphosed fragments, contradictions of reality. Artworks are assembled like a puzzle, a collage of fragments, touches gestures or recognizable elements, a complex game, a scenography as such. A show that every viewer consumes before deciphering it. She built a utopian habitat by implementing imaginary, fantastic elements. The main character, a personal look of the female character is found in most of her artworks. It creates a relationship between feminist discourse and natural elements transposed through the image collage, all coexisting on the same surface. In works such as “My inner wolf” or “Leviathan” it is possible to decipher the route she takes by detaching herself from precise references
