About the artist

Adeoti Azeez Afeez is a skilled ceramic artist known for his sgraffito technique, which brings out contrasting colors on clay coated with engobe. He draws inspiration from his Yoruba heritage and personal self-awareness, infusing his art with cultural and introspective elements. His work has been featured in various group exhibitions, including Beyond Limit 2022, Colour Theory, AMG Projects 2023, and (Sur)face exhibition at chilli art projects 2023. Additionally, he took part in the Statues Also Breath workshop with Prune Nourry, in collaboration with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

Artist Statement

In the realm of ceramic art, I find my true expression. My journey as a sgraffito ceramicist revolves around the intricate dance of revealing contrasting colors on engobe-coated clay. Through the delicate art of cross-hatching, I breathe life into my works, infusing them with depth, tone, and chiaroscuro. My artistic inspiration is a fusion of two powerful forces: my Yoruba roots and a profound sense of self-consciousness. I draw from the rich tapestry of Yoruba traditions, incorporating elements of identity and introspection into every piece. This cultural and personal interplay infuses my art with a unique vibrancy, bridging the gap between heritage and self-expression.
